Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $195,404)

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against gun criminals, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The Fund for the City of New York, serving as the fiscal agent for the Eastern District of New York, will use the grant to implement strategies that aggressively focus on the prevention and prosecution of crimes involving the use of firearms, gang violence, and drugs. Through the grant, the PSN steering committee will continue prior year efforts by dividing funds equally among the four District Attorney's Offices within the Eastern District. Specifically, Queens County will partially fund the salary of an assistant district attorney assigned to the Gang Violence and Hate Crimes Bureau in the Rockaways to coordinate the fight against illegal guns and gangs. Kings County (Brooklyn) will dedicate funds to an assistant district attorney to work with the Gun Part Bureau, which focuses on tracking guns and prosecuting gun cases. Richmond County (Staten Island) will fund two assistant district attorneys assigned to gun and gang cases. Nassau County will fund their School Violence Prevention Initiative, which educates middle school students in anger management, conflict resolution, and social coping skills.
