Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $149,954)
The purposes of the FY 2009 Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) are to develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide training and technical assistance for tribal court staff. The TCAP program goals are to provide planning grants that will focus on establishing tribal courts by supporting the development of comprehensive strategy and implementation plans, provide grants for existing tribal court systems to enhance tribal court services, and provide planning grants for tribal justice system strategies.
The Penobscot Nation will enhance the operations of Penobscot Nation Tribal Court. They will upgrade computers, court recording technology, and their case management system. The enhancements will allow for effective case management and collaboration with other agencies and jurisdictions. The Penobscot Nation will provide training to tribal court personnel. They will implement their Healing Justice program to assist case resolutions that bring about healing and reconciliation of juvenile offenders within the community. The Penobscot Nation will improve communication, court system technology, information sharing, and reporting capabilities of the Penobscot Nation Tribal Court.
