The Recovery Act - Renovation of Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Discretionary Grant Program assists tribes in developing strategies to cost effectively construct or renovate existing facilities associated with the incarceration and rehabilitation of juvenile and adult offenders subject to tribal jurisdiction. Careful planning is critical to ensure that new and renovated correctional facilities are appropriately designed for the intended population, supportive of cultural and traditional values, safe and secure when completed, and are in compliance with appropriate standards regarding correctional operations, programs, and design.

The Pascua Yaqui Tribe is the fiscal agent for this award. The Department of Public Safety plans to utilize the grant funds to construct a Category II Single-Tribe Multi-Purpose Justice Center. The construction of this facility will include a twenty (20) bed detention holding facility and space for alternative programs for behavioral health, education, mental health, and treatment. The grantee posits the construction of this facility will reduce the daily inmate population, allow for treatment opportunities for inmates, allow for alternative sentencing options for the courts, reduce recidivism, and create/preserve jobs.
