Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $183,918)

The purpose of the Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program (42 U.S.C. 3797u et seq.) is to provide financial and technical assistance to states, state courts, local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments to develop and implement drug treatment courts that effectively integrate substance abuse treatment, mandatory drug testing, sanctions and incentives, and transitional services in a judicially supervised court setting with jurisdiction over nonviolent, substance-abusing offenders. The FY 2010 Adult Drug Court Discretionary Grant Program will provide grant funds to jurisdictions to implement or enhance a local drug court or to improve, enhance, expand, or financial support drug court services statewide.

Van Buren County Circuit Court will use the grant funds to enhance the Van Buren Drug Treatment Court (VBDTC) to assist nonviolent offenders with successful rehabilitation from the use of drugs and/or alcohol. The intent of the enhancement will be to improve the quality and intensity of non-treatment support recovery services and treatment services available to program participants. This will be accomplished by collaborating and partnering with local service providers and increasing the capacity of the VBDTC to meet participants' needs. The non-treatment recovery services that VBDTC will offer are medical and dental services, relapse prevention, parenting classes, trauma recovery, and acupuncture. Grant funds will also be used to hire an ancillary services provider and an administrative assistant to coordinate and provide services more effectively.
