Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $3,192,378)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Office of the Governor of Kansas will use fiscal year 2010 JAG funds to strengthen partnerships for safer communities and enhance the state's capacity to prevent, solve, and control crime by awarding funds to state and local agencies that support and implement the JAG seven purpose areas in preventing and responding to crime. The JAG funds will continue to address crime though the provision of services directly to individuals and communities and by improving the effectiveness and efficiency of criminal justice systems, processes, and procedures. The project's goals are to continue the state's support of drug task forces and local law enforcement needs; enhance the prosecution and court efforts of the criminal justice system; provide resources for prevention of crime; assist state and local corrections programs in working with offenders and crime victims; continue efforts that address treatment as an alternative to incarceration; continue the enhancement and support of the Kansas Criminal Justice Information System; and continue efforts that address assistance for victims and witnesses of crime.
