FY2010 Local JAG Program

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The city of Fairbanks, through the Fairbanks Police Department (FPD), will use the JAG funds to pay the personnel costs of a trained drug investigator to participate in the Alaska Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Enforcement (ABADE) Unit, a statewide task force made up of selected law enforcement experts. As a participating member of the ABADE Unit, the assigned Fairbanks Police Investigator is expected to be an integral member of the unit, making a substantial contribution towards overall unit performance. Specific objectives that should be realized by the assigned investigator will include: working as an effective team member with others assigned to the unit; developing cases for prosecution through acceptable investigative methods; assisting in the identification and seizure of assets in accordance with federal, state, and local procedures; and acting as a conduit of information between the Statewide ABADE Unit and the Fairbanks Police Department, particularly regarding the sharing of information between FPD Patrol and Investigations Divisions regarding current criminal activity in Fairbanks.
