Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $95,455)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions consisting of Barnstable County and the towns of Barnstable, Bourne, Falmouth and Yarmouth will use the JAG award in the amount of $95,455 to support law enforcement initiatives, technology upgrades, and overtime. The town of Barnstable, serving as the fiscal agent, will use $43,729 to purchase technology upgrades and supplies for the Barnstable Police Department. The town of Bourne will use $11,351 to support the investigation of prescription narcotic abusers and the associated crimes relative to illegal prescription drug use. The town of Falmouth will use $18,661 to purchase handguns and holsters. The town of Yarmouth will use $21,714 to pay for overtime, training equipment, and trailer rental for all sworn officers to attend terrorism response training. Barnstable County will receive no JAG funds.
