The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Nevada Department of Public Safety will use its 2010 JAG award in support of programs to reduce, prevent, and control crime and to improve the functioning of the criminal justice system. Specifically, the following program areas will be funded: 1) four major multi-jurisdictional gang task forces and a state-wide gang intelligence database; 13 multi-jurisdictional narcotics task forces that encompass all but one county; and one K-9 Unit for Washoe County Sheriff's Office; 2) a Court Services Program for rural Churchill County that will continue funding the Court Services Department to provide pre-trial, misdemeanor, probation, alternative sentencing, step-down, and work programs; 3) a Latino Community Outreach Program for Carson City, through a collaboration with the Partnership Carson City and the Carson City District Attorney's Office, to initiate early intervention strategies targeting Latino neighborhood disenfranchisement; 4) planning, evaluation, and technology improvements for Washoe County Sheriff's Office; and 5) drug treatment & prevention involving housing and treatment for parole offenders in northern Nevada.
