The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The city of Portsmouth and county of Scioto are disparate jurisdictions. The FY 2010 Justice Assistance Grant will support the retention of law enforcement personnel and information technology support. The city of Portsmouth will be the fiscal agency for the award of $14,906.00. The county of Scioto Sheriff's Office will use the funds to increase the number of hours for Deputy positions, thereby increasing the level of service the citizens of Scioto County.
The Portsmouth Police Department (PPD) will use their funds to pay for contractual support for existing information technology hardware and systems within the agency. The PPD has created a large amount of information technology infrastructure within their agency, but lacks the certified IT support personnel needed to service the infrastructure. The Portsmouth Police Department believes that contracting with an IT support company will maximize their resources and ensure a more effective criminal justice system on a local level, while furthering the mission of shared intelligence and homeland security on a state and national level.
