Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $33,796)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The city of Malden will use the FY 2010 JAG funds to increase effective and efficient police services by the purchase of a new marked police vehicle with a laptop to be utilized by uniformed officers in the field. Officers will have a safe, visible vehicle to assist citizens and ensure a continuation of interaction with local citizens as well as a safer community due to new equipment. The marked vehicle fleet has become in dire need of replenishing. Many line cars have over 100,000 miles, an estimated industry standard for duration of use. This is coupled with the vehicle maintenance/repair account being reduced, often causes delays and/or postponement of secondary issues for police vehicles. The end result is a shortfall of vehicles to be used by patrol officers. The Malden Police Department, by the purchase of a new marked vehicle with laptop, will continue the ongoing relationship of its sector officers conversing with local citizens and businesses. Also, transmissions via laptop computer will be conducted.
