Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $819,591)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) will use their FY 2010 JAG award to fund the five Regional Drug Enforcement Teams (DETs) that are geographically located throughout the state. DCI currently has 30 Agents and 31 Task Force Officers (TFOs) assigned to the five DETs who work on a daily basis coordinating drug investigative information with local, state, and federal counterparts. Funds will be utilized towards funding local law enforcement officers and deputies for assignment to each of the five enforcement teams, in addition to providing overtime funding for full-time DCI agents investigating drug and violent crimes. This will increase local law enforcement participation, coordination and cooperation for the drug team that focuses enforcement efforts in their respective region. In addition, all five DETs assist local law enforcement with traditional and violent crime investigations, when requested. The funds from this award enables DCI to add critical TFO support to the drug enforcement teams, increasing investigations, arrests, drug seizures, money seizures, and successful prosecutions.
