The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation). The Mississippi Division of Public Safety Planning serves as the State Administering Agency (SAA) for Mississippi and will implement the 2009 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program as prescribed under the Act.

The Mississippi Division of Public Safety Planning serves as the State Administering Agency (SAA) for Mississippi and will implement the 2010 JAG Program as prescribed under the Act. Mississippi's plan is a comprehensive approach that addresses the crime problems facing the state's criminal justice system and is a criminal justice system-wide enhancement program built upon existing state and local drug and violent crime resource needs and gaps in the current system. It strengthens identified weaknesses in the system, and increases coordination between state and local agencies in their efforts to apprehend and prosecute drug violators, and to seize illicit drugs and drug traffic-generated assets. Grant funds will be used to fund projects which support the following priorities: multi-jurisdictional drug task force programs, local law enforcement enhancement programs; technology improvements; and investigative training. The SAA will retain ten percent of the grant funds for administrative purposes.
