The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions of the City of Lawton and Comanche County will use their JAG grant in the amount of $131,890 for the purchase of equipment. The Lawton Police Department will purchase a dive team recovery pontoon boat, bar code scanning system, video-audio recovery system, forensic computer recovery system, records scanning system and a dive team equipment trailer. The Comanche County Sheriff's Department will purchase various prisoner restraints, a tire balancer, a tire mounter and a vehicle code scanner for its fleet maintenance section. They will also purchase computer software in order to design and establish a WEB page. The sheriff's department will update their server through the purchase and installation of two 1-terabyte hard drives and related software. In addition, the sheriff's department will purchase one 800 MHz mobile radio and ammunition to be used in training. With these equipment purchases, both departments will be able to improve overall operations through improved communication and information technology, as well as further enhance public safety on the city and county lakes and throughout the respective jurisdictions.
