Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $142,603)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The city of Laredo and Webb County are listed as disparate jurisdictions under the FY 2010 JAG Local Program. The city will serve as the fiscal agent to administer the JAG funds.
The city of Laredo Police Department will utilize its portion of funds to hire two staff: (1) Evidence Tech Clerk, who will assist the Property Division by taking custody of all evidence confiscated by the police department, organize and store evidence until needed at trial, and identify the owner of the property; and (2) Network Specialist, who will assist the MIS Department with the development and maintenance of telecommunications systems, including computer hardware/software testing and documenting for application and systems programs.
Webb County will allocate its portion of JAG funds to the following Sheriff's Office divisions: (1) Warrants and Civil Divisions to procure needed police cruisers; and (2) Jail Division to acquire correctional staff protective equipment and supplies (uniforms, body protection, helmets, shields, equipment cases, etc.).
