Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $28,550)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The city of Sherman, city of Denison, and Grayson County are listed as disparate jurisdictions under the FY 2010 JAG Local Program. Each entity will utilize JAG funds for law enforcement purposes.

Grant funds will be used by the following law enforcement entities:
(1) The city of Sherman Police Department proposes to acquire a new patrol car to ensure reliable and safe tranportation for first responders and the individuals they transport.
(2) The city of Denison Police Department will procure P-25 compliant digital radios with advanced features and channels for its tactical van, in addition to LED emergency lighting equipment.
(3) The Grayson County Sheriff's Office proposes to purchase digital in-car cameras with evidence manager software and digital (still) cameras. The camera upgrades will not only improve clarity of evidentiary data for prosecutors, but also enhance deputy safety by allowing critical analysis of performance and procedures.
