Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $31,776)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions consisting of the city of La Crosse and county of La Crosse will use this JAG grant award ($31,776) to purchase law enforcement equipment. The city of La Cross, serving as the fiscal agent, will allocate JAG funds ($15,888) to its Police Department for equipment purchases aimed at enhancing its investigative capabilities. This equipment will include a GPS tracking device, infrared night vision scope, and crime scene response equipment. Additionally, the La Crosse police department will purchase equipment to enhance the department's security with swipe card door locks. The County of La Crosse will use this award ($15,888) to purchase radios, both portable and mobile, to become APCO compliant. These radios will enhance the Sheriff Department's ability to communicate effectively in an interoperable environment. The radios will also enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and safety of the La Crosse County Sheriffs Department.
