The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The city of Denton, city of Lewisville, and Denton County are listed as disparate jurisdictions under the FY 2010 JAG Local Program. Denton County will serve as the fiscal agent to administer the JAG funds. Each entity will utilize grant funds for law enforcement equipment.

The Denton County Sheriff's Office will acquire an automated license plate recognition system complete with software, GPS module and accessories. This system will be utilized by the patrol division in order to reduce the time it takes to run a license plate.

The city of Lewisville proposes to purchase a commercial grade refrigarator and shelving units for property evidence storage. The refrigerator will be used to store DWI blood evidence, DNA samples, sexual assault examination evidence kits, and other evidence consisting of biological material, while the shelves are to be used for extra storage of said items. In addition, the city will procure a security camera system to be installed within its police building. The system would enhance video surveillance capabilities at the police department, enable the department to acquire cameras that are compatible with the city's new survillance camera platform, and provide enhanced security of the property room.

The city of Denton Police Department will acquire the following law enforcement equipment: radars, cameras and accompanying accessories, evidence drying cabinets, tasers and accompanying accessories, and digital recording equipment.
