The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The city of Georgetown will use JAG funds towards the continuation and expansion of youth initiatives within the city. JAG funds will be used to support the Student Leadership Development Series and the Georgetown Police Department Summer Camp. The Student Leadership Development is a series of five dinner lectures where local community leaders are invited to dinner to make a presentation on their chosen field, emphasizing what they feel makes a good leader. This program also encourages the students to be leaders in their school and community, displaying behavior that other young people should emulate. The Georgetown Police Department Summer Camp is a program that offers a diversity of both educational and recreational programs to enrich the lives of the youth in the community. The goals of these initiatives are to establish positive interactions and perceptions between younger citizens and the police department while reinforcing the need to avoid delinquent and deviant behaviors.
