Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $62,592)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The city of Coons Rapids is in a disparate situation with fellow cities Columbia Heights and Fridley and the County of Anoka for the submission of a joint 2010 JAG application.
The city of Coon Rapids will use its portion of the award to pay for investigative equipment and supplies, software that will track the training schedules for officers, and supplies that will enhance officer safety during high-risk entries or during responding to weapons' incidents near schools.
The city of Columbia Heights will purchase electric bicycles for the creation of a bicycle patrol unit and automated external defibrillators for assisting victims of crime and officers hurt while on duty, such as from assaults or vehicle accidents.
The city of Fridley will purchase pistols, magazine holders, holsters, and ammunition for the City of Fridley Police Department.
Lastly, Anoka County will purchase cold water dive suits for evidence and body recovery, a Special Weapons and Tactics vest, desktop computers for investigating internet crimes against children, and a laptop for an investigator's squad car.
