Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $95,792)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions consisting of the city of Evansville and Vanderburgh County will use their JAG award in the amount of $95,792 to fund problem-solving and technology initiatives. The city of Evansville will provide $84,778 to pay overtime costs for sworn and support personnel of the Evansville Police Department (EPD). The EPD personnel funded by this award will concentrate on problem-solving activities, such as, but not limited to, domestic violence, street level drug interdiction, juvenile restorative justice, and neighborhood association meetings. Officers are not able to address these problems during normal working hours due to the number of calls for service. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's office will utilize $11,014 to purchase and install in-car video cameras. These cameras will increase officer safety, as well as provide documentation for the prosecution of criminal cases.
