The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions of the county of Allegheny, the cities of Duquesne, McKeesport and Pittsburgh, the municipality of Monroeville, the township of Penn Hills and the boroughs of Swissvale and Wilkinsburg will use this 2010 JAG award to boost their coordinated crime prevention and reduction strategies. The County will use the funds ($204,815) to retain criminal justice personnel and to purchase law enforcement vehicles. The Duquesne ($11,939), Wilkinsburg ($22,705) and McKeesport ($38,373) Police Departments will purchase police cruisers. The Pittsburgh ($287,266), Swissvale ($11,269) and Monroeville ($12,023) Police Departments will purchase equipment. The Penn Hills Police Department ($23,417) will purchase mobile data terminals. The decision by the county and municipalities to use the grant funds in this way reflects their commitment to ensuring the health, safety and protection of their citizens by having well trained, equipped and prepared law enforcement agencies.
