Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $27,563)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions consisting of the city of Shawnee and Pottawatomie County will use their JAG award in the amount of $27,563 to purchase ballistic shields, software, graffiti cameras, tactical equipment and ammunition. Ballistic shields and tactical entry tools will be used to equip a new police department tactical unit. Celebrite Physical Pro Software cell equipment will be procured to keep detectives current working knowledge of personal electronic communication devices. With the continued rise in cell phone use, the department has seen an increased use of this equipment to facilitate crime, to include crimes against children. The Shawnee Police Department currently assists many surrounding agencies with forensic analysis of these type devices and will continue to do so. Lastly, the Shawnee Police Department is seeking two graffiti cameras to combat continued destruction of property citywide. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office will use the grant funds to purchase tactical equipment and digital cameras. The sheriff's office will purchase tactical entry tools, entry shields and rifle ammunition for tactical training. In addition, that office will purchase a GPS system and four motion cameras to track stolen property. The city of Shawnee will serve as the fiscal agent for this award.
