Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $250,000)

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) will utilize funds to develop a Model Policy, Concepts and Issues Paper, and training on protecting the physical and emotional well-being of children when their parents have been, or are about to be, arrested. Research clearly indicates that such events can and often do have negative impact on a child's immediate and long-term emotional and physical health.
This project seeks to provide best practices for officers when dealing with children of arrested parents. Officer policy, procedures, and training will be delivered and distributed to the law enforcement community by IACP through print media, in-person facilitations at various law enforcement meetings and events, hosted webinars, and self-paced web-based training. IACP's many meetings of committees, sections, affiliated state associations, and international and national conferences provide excellent opportunities to present the findings of this project.
