Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $767,656)
The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) will develop or enhance a national outreach program to increase awareness among law enforcement agencies and the public in addressing the needs of missing persons with Alzheimer's disease. Each year, law enforcement agencies expend countless hours searching for missing persons with Alzheimer's disease, and if not found quickly, such persons are at high risk of serious injury or even death. In addition, law enforcement officers may not be trained or equipped to handle the special needs of those with Alzheimer's, once they are found. IACP will partner with national level law enforcement and Alzheimer's disease associations to address this issue. They will provide a web site that serves as a national clearinghouse of information and resources for those involved with missing persons. IACP will develop and implement a process for aiding in the location of lost persons with Alzheimer's disease, provide training and substantive informational material to law enforcement agencies through a national or regional initiative. They will also support and promote the nationwide implementation of a model policy by law enforcement agencies. CA/NCF
The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) will expand the reach and visibility of this Missing Alzheimer's Initiative by developing and implementing a nationwide training and marketing program in order to ensure maximum impact of the projects within the first responder community. In addition to the resources and tools provided through the toolkit, IACP will encourage law enforcement to take advantage of existing, well-established programs, such as MedicAlert + Alzheimer's Safe Return Registry. They will expand Alzheimer's training in various parts of the United States and provide "train-the-trainer" sessions to maximize the use of the Alzheimer's training.
Ensuring the safety and security of this special population is the central goal for the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)'s Alzheimer's Initiatives. IACP will expand the reach of this initiative by continuing to deliver high-quality classroom training, develop a train-the-trainer model which will enable more departments to benefit from the curriculum and continue to raise awareness and visibility of the issue within the law enforcement community by marketing existing tools and resources through the many channels of IACP.
