Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $211,840)
The Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification (SAVIN) program ensures victims of crime receive accurate and timely information regarding the status of offenders and events related to their cases. Through SAVIN, victims are able to participate in the judicial process and make sound decisions to protect themselves from further victimization while maintaining total anonymity. This information-sharing capability is also available to courts, corrections, and law enforcement officials.
The Vermont Department of Corrections will use their 2010 SAVIN funds to transform the current VAN Service into a seamless "one-stop" statewide notification and information system. The enhancement will be able to update and inform victims, survivors, affected persons, and the general public about the status and progress of offenders throughout the entire criminal justice process. When completed, the project will be expanded to provide information and notification about the custody status of the offender, the scheduling and status of court events, and the status of cases during the protective order process. This project will create an interface between VANS and the courts and State's Attorney's databases. It will create a centralized protective order data collection and notification system, which will be used by court and law enforcement personnel and plaintiffs in domestic violence cases.
