Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $170,000)
Under this award, the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety will further enhance and operate a victim centered human trafficking task force in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney's Office, Federal law enforcement, and their Office for Victims of Crime Human Trafficking Services provider to identify and rescue victims of human trafficking, proactively investigate human trafficking, and prosecute traffickers. The primary goal of this program is to identify and rescue foreign victims of trafficking through a victim centered, proactive investigation strategy. The secondary goal is the interdiction of trafficking and the successful prosecution of traffickers.
The Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ), on behalf of the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, will use the 2010 Human Trafficking Task Force Initiative funds to support personnel, travel, training, and supplies for the New Jersey Human Trafficking Task Force (NJHTTF). Specifically, the grant funds will be used to identify and rescue foreign victims of human trafficking, provide services to trafficking victims, investigate targeted persons and locations, and prosecute traffickers. NJHTTF has developed and conducted training, and will continue to do so, for law enforcement who work on local, county, state, and federal levels. The training focuses primarily on identifying and rescuing human trafficking victims, investigating such crimes, and the importance of working with a multi-disciplinary team in order to support victims. Also, training conducted for victim services providers includes information on law enforcement's role in order to ensure that victim services organizations understand the judicial process.
