Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $51,000)

The U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Office of Special Counsel for Immigration Related Unfair Employment Practices (OSC) funds grants to conduct public education programs about the rights afforded potential victims of employment discrimination and the responsibilities of employers under the anti-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), 8 U.S.C. §1324b.
Programs funded by the OSC grant program are required to design and implement public education campaigns to address immigration related unfair employment discrimination by educating workers, employers, and the general public about the anti-discrimination provision of the INA.

The University of Iowa (UI), in cooperation with the UI Center for Human Rights, the UI Labor Center, the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service, and Nebraska Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest, will use the grant funds to conduct a regional education campaign on the non-discrimination rights of foreign-born workers. The primary goal is to continue reaching a large, diverse, and underserved population of immigrants in the upper Midwest, with a broadened focus on workers in manufacturing (especially meatpacking), construction, janitorial/retail services, and agriculture. The secondary goal is to reach employers and the public in Midwestern communities acutely affected by recent dramatic increases in immigrant populations. Award funds will be used to disseminate campaign materials and replicable workshop curricula to other educators, union representatives, legal counsel, and service providers who work directly with target worker audiences.
