Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $48,406)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
Arlington County will support the Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) and the Arlington County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) to purchase law enforcement equipment. ACPD will purchase cell phones to replace older ones which are being phased out and will no longer be supported by the county's wireless data network. Also, ACPD will purchase trauma kits that will be available to officers in the field and will allow self treatment or treatment by a fellow officer for injuries occurring in a active shooter environment prior to medic arrival. ACSO will purchase ballistic vest carriers that will allow deputies to wear their vests on top of their uniforms, thus making them more comfortable and easier to use.
