Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $4,423,859)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) will use Fiscal Year 2011 JAG funds to enhance Indiana's criminal and juvenile justice systems through evidence-based programming and deliver technology to state and local jurisdictions to enhance criminal justice information sharing efforts. Major objectives to reach these goals will be based on the funding decisions for programs which fit within the six purpose areas ICJI has designated. Major objectives will involve intelligence-led law enforcement programming to meet the needs of local communities, the development of enforcement initiatives that targets specific drug crimes and offenders, assistance with the prosecution of drug and violent offenders and problem solving court initiatives, the increase of juvenile justice programming, the provision of community based alternatives to incarceration, the development of reentry programs to assist offenders returning to the community, and enhancement of criminal justice information sharing and technology initiatives.
