Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $45,085)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

Spotsylvania County will work with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office and Commonwealth Attorney's Office to improve the quality of life through a partnership with the community by protecting life, property, and reducing the fear of crime. In order to ensure coordination and a more effective justice system the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office and Commonwealth Attorney's Office will utilize the funding to purchase and install audio/visual equipment for the new Circuit Court Building.

Spotsylvania County will purchase and install jury deliberation displays and DVD players for the courtroom overflow area, underage victim testimony display, and equipment for the video mixing room to be able to control camera feeds and allow interactive deliberations between courtrooms as well as remote locations. An additional camera will also be purchased for the courtroom.
