The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

Anderson County will utilize the FY 2011 JAG award to improve the efficiency of the Sheriff's Department through technology upgrades. The goals of the project are to: Assist the Sex Offender Registration Unit by facilitating data collection, offender processing, and transmittal of data to the State Law Enforcement Division; assist the Narcotics Division in the extraction of passwords and data from mobile devices, file systems, GPS units, and other electronic devices; help the Professional Standards Division achieve peak efficiency, maintain CALEA accreditation, and promote environmentally-sound practices; provide the necessary technology infrastructure for the Criminal Investigation Division; and complete implementation of the ACSO's Mobile Data Access initiative. Funds will allow the Sheriff's Office to procure one (1) FBI and SLED-approved LiveScan machine with associated hardware and software, a support module for Universal Forensic Extraction Devices, Document Management System software to allow electronic submittals of compliance with accreditation standards, updated PCs for investigators, and additional laptop computers for the Uniform Patrol Division, the Criminal Apprehension Through Community Help (CATCH) Team, and the School Resource Officer Unit.
