Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $101,887)

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun and gang crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against persons involved in gun and gang crime, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance, serving as the fiscal agent for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, will provide continued resources for community efforts to reduce and prevent gun and gang violence, including subawards to local agencies for law enforcement, prevention, and intervention activities. The goals of the district's PSN initiative are to reduce the occurrence of violent gang-related incidents through reactive and proactive efforts supported by enforcement planning, informed by data and real-time intelligence; and reduce the occurrence of youth gang-related incidents and increase positive outcomes for youth at risk of gang involvement through targeted, evidenced-based gang prevention. Grant funded projects will support collaborative community-wide efforts that link gun violence, gang prevention, and intervention efforts in schools and the community with law enforcement suppression efforts. The Project Safe Neighborhoods Task Force, the Anti-Gang Advisory Group, the United States Attorney's Office and the State Office of Justice Assistance will oversee the planning and implementation process of all Project Safe Neighborhoods and Anti-Gang Projects.
