Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $156,500)

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun and gang crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against persons involved in gun and gang crime, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.

The Texas Office of the Attorney General, serving as the fiscal agent for the Western District of Texas, will fund projects selected by the PSN task force appointed by the United States Attorney. They will hire an assistant attorney general cross-designated as a special assistant United States attorney to focus on crimes involving gangs, guns, and violence in the San Antonio area. In addition, the task force has chosen to designate the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) as its partner in both research and implementation of a strategy to identify, indict, and arrest violent gang members. The SAPD has designated a task force officer to work exclusively with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in firearms investigations. ATF is committed to investigating the above-mentioned gang members and to working with the SAPD Gang Unit to develop additional cases and share intelligence.
