Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $129,572)
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide commitment to reducing gun and gang crime, links existing local programs together and provides them with necessary tools. PSN 1) takes a hard line against persons involved in gun and gang crime, using every available means to create safer neighborhoods; 2) seeks to achieve heightened coordination among federal, state, and local law enforcement; and 3) emphasizes tactical intelligence gathering, more aggressive prosecutions, and enhanced accountability through performance measures. The United States Attorney in each federal judicial district will lead the offensive. The fiscal agent, in coordination with the PSN Task Force, will allocate funds throughout the community.
The Massachusetts Office of Public Safety, serving as the fiscal agent for the District of Massachusetts, will support Gang Prevention Summit and law enforcement training for police officers. In addition, PSN wull fund firearm evidence kits for chemist, support overtime hours to investigate federal drug cases and support the development of anti-gang outreach materials. Remaining funds will be used to hire a PSN research partner who will be responsible for conducting data analysis and evaluation. The Massachusetts Department of Public Safety will continue to concentrate efforts on areas where the most practical impact is evident: intelligence and data-driven practices, officer safety and education and community awareness.
