Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2012, $342,226)

The University of South Carolina Research Foundation's project is designed to address this important gap in law enforcement policy and practice through an evidence-based strategy. As such, this project focuses on the development of model policies and practices that will be based on an empirical analysis of organizational characteristics that account for differences in crash rates across agencies. These characteristics include the official agency driving-related data and policies, perceptions of command staff, trainers and line officers regarding driving attitudes, activities, habits, and agency accountability, as well as the culture of the officers in the agency. The project will focus on law enforcement agencies in California, but has implications for agencies nationwide. The overall project goal is the development of empirical knowledge on organizational practices that contribute to lower officer-involved vehicle crash rates, which will be subsequently used to develop model policy and practices that can be adopted by other agencies.
