IADLEST: Exploring the Integration of 'Blue Courage' Principles Into Existing Curricula

The International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement (IADLEST), a business partner with Blue Courage, will pilot the Blue Courage principles in basic training academy curriculums for three academy test sites. The purpose of implementing the Blue Courage principles in the pilot sites is to facilitate a change in culture. The classes will be offered to chiefs of police and sheriffs to introduce and make them aware of the Blue Courage concepts, and to first line supervisors and field training officers to teach them the ideas and values that need to be emphasized and woven throughout their training and employment. The Blue Courage team will incorporate the principles into the existing academy curriculum. In addition, extensive training will be provided to basic academy instructors which will allow them to understand how to apply and teach these principles in their existing presentations. To help keep the academies on track, IADLEST will provide technical assistance and will also conduct an evaluation to determine the effectiveness of the training.

The five sites will be determined by the advisory group and Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). To facilitate a change in culture, classes will be offered to chiefs and sheriffs to introduce and make them aware of these concepts, and to first line supervisors and field training officers to teach them the ideas and values that need to be emphasized and woven throughout their training and employment.

The Blue Courage team will incorporate the principles into the existing academy curriculum. Extensive training will be given to the basic academy instructors to train them on how to implement these principles into the training, as well as, how to apply and teach these principles in their existing presentations. To help keep the academies on track, technical assistance will be offered where the blue courage team will assist academies in teaching the techniques and help with any problems they are experiencing. The IADLEST will evaluate up to five academy test sites to determine the effectiveness of the training, as well as, the change on recruits after they leave the academy and return to their individual agencies. Ideally, these evaluations should be done within two to five years after recruits graduate to measure if there was an actual change in the culture of the department. NCA/NCF

Blue Courage classes will be offered to Chiefs and Sheriffs to introduce and make them aware of these concepts, and to first-line supervisors and field training officers to teach them the ideas and values that need to be emphasized and woven throughout their training and employment.
