The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The City of Olathe, City of Shawnee, City of Overland Park, and Johnson County Kansas will receive grant funds under the Bureau of Justice Assistance FY 2012 JAG Local Program. As disparate jurisdictions, Johnson County Kansas will serve as the fiscal agent to administer the JAG funds.

Johnson County will use their allocated share to purchase law enforcement equipment for the Sheriff's Office to support programs and purchase software for internet citizens' report filing. The City of Olathe will replace aged/obsolete law enforcement equipment and purchase additional equipment to support team operations. The City of Overland Park will purchase tasers for police officers in various areas of law enforcement. The City of Shawnee will acquire on-line reporting software for the police department. The software will enable the department to be more efficient with the deployment of officers to other areas for enforcement.
