The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The New Mexico Department of Public Safety will utilize FY 2012 JAG funding to provide state agencies and units of local governments additional personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, travel and training, technical assistance, and information systems for criminal justice. This support will be in accordance with the state's approach to combating illicit drug issues and violent crime under the JAG purpose areas of law enforcement programs and planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs. The state's drug strategy centers on a regionally coordinated approach to eradicate drug trafficking, drug abuse, and criminal activity associated with illicit drug abuse. Sub-recipients are encouraged to develop programs and projects, as well as determining what evaluation activities to utilize, that show the effectiveness of their proposed programs in meeting the goals of the drug strategy.
