Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2012, $49,577,780)

The Democratic Presidential Candidate Nominating Convention (DNC) will be held September 3-6, 2012, in the City of Charlotte, North Carolina. The DNC was designated a National Special Security Event (NSSE) by the Department of Homeland Security in February 2011. With NSSE status, the United States Secret Service (USSS) is the lead agency in charge of security for the DNC. The city of Charlotte will use the grant funds to provide public safety and security during the DNC. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) will assign over 1,200 officers to this event. The CMPD will supplement its officers with more than 2,600 officers from police agencies in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.; CMPD civilian staff; and Charlotte Fire Department staff. The funds will be utilized to pay salary and overtime costs, purchase equipment and supplies, provide training, and provide travel, transportation and lodging costs.
