The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The city of Burlington and Alamance County have been certified disparate and have agreed to share the aggregate of funds allocated to them through the FY 2013 JAG Program. The city will use funds for equipment/supply purchases such as lights and holsters for weapons, in-car printers and accessories for patrol vehicles, and rifles for officers. Funds will also allow the police department to enhance officer training by incorporating simunitions and a Redman suit to augment training scenarios. The combination of these items will provide training to officers in real life encounters with suspects who are resisting arrest or are armed and returning fire to officers. Alamance County Sheriff Department's primary goal is to improve the safety of their undercover deputies by purchasing a button threaded camera to be worn by their undercover officers. Funds will also be used to increase first aid abilities for their deputies by purchasing emergency packs which can be placed in their patrol cars. NCA/NCF
