Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The City of Abilene and Taylor County will utilize the FY 2013 Local JAG award to purchase equipment. Specifically, the Abilene Police Department will purchase a DVD/CD burner to augment the department's mobile video recording system, and will acquire portable ballistic shield and control devices. Taylor County Sheriff's Office will purchase COBAN body camera packages, ballistic shields, body armor, and accessories. The goals are to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the evidence handling procedures, and to enhance officer safety by providing officers with equipment needed to handle critical incidents.
