The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

Fiscal Year 2013 JAG funds will be used to support crime prevention and intervention programs which aim to complete the following goals: 1. Provide intervention and prevention services to secondary victims of domestic violence and increase community awareness of domestic violence dangers; 2. Prevent offender recidivism and reduce crime by offender employment and educating employers on the benefits, challenges and incentives of hiring ex-offenders; 3. Provide education and prevention to citizens and other participants by developing new partnerships to improve problem-solving capabilities in the community; 4. Create a learning foundation to develop skills necessary to increase the total number of GEDs; increasing reading comprehension, and reducing the recidivism rate of ex-offenders; and 5. Provide a criminological assessment to determine the needs of each participant in order to offer comprehensive and specific related services to facilitate their successful transition back in to society as a productive citizen.
