Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $187,731)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The grantee will use the award to fund initiatives with focus on crime reduction. Funds will be used for the Hillsborough County Criminal Justice Grant Administration Unit to provide oversight of the award; a Crisis Center Community-Based Prevention and Education Program; Code Enforcement Crime Prevention Project to focus on crime prevention, crime reduction, graffiti abatement and enforcement of criminal laws; a Hillsborough Drug Take Back Initiative to expand the current prescription and over the counter drug program throughout the County; and to complete a 13th Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office Workload and Staffing Study. Salary, fringe benefits, travel, and supplies necessary for these projects will be funded. Overall objectives are to help reduce property crime, violent crime and overall crime throughout the County.
