The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The City of Lynchburg will utilize its JAG funds to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Lynchburg Police Department's Digital Evidence Recording Unit, Property and Evidence Unit, and Field Operations Bureau by purchasing equipment used to examine and investigate crimes involving computers and mobile devices and providing adequate evidence storage and equipment to field patrol officers. Funds will also be used to improve the capability of the Lynchburg Sheriff's Office to address use of force situations through the use of less-than-lethal options, while enhancing the safety of all involved. Finally, funds will improve the capability of the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney to increase the prosecutors' ability to quickly and efficiently print case and court related items including dockets, case notes, incident reports, and subpoenas from the case management system for all three courts (General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Court).
