Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $857,725)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The state of Alaska will use their Fiscal Year 2014 JAG award to support the continuation of the Statewide Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force and Prosecution Program, under the leadership of the Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Bureau of Investigations - Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU). Goals of this effort include: 1) Investigate and apprehend distributors of controlled substances and illegal alcohol; 2) Provide training and technical assistance to local agencies in their narcotics investigation efforts; 3) Coordinate special prosecution support to multi-jurisdictional task force efforts throughout the state to prosecute and convict mid- and upper-level drug traffickers;, and 4) Coordinate efforts involving Byrne Justice Assistance Grant funds with efforts involving related justice funds in support of efforts that include prevention, enforcement, adjudication, corrections, and treatment.
