Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $34,260)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The city of Salisbury and Rowan County have been identified as disparate and have agreed to share the aggregate of funds allocated to them through the Fiscal Year 2014 JAG program for their Surveillance and Weapons Project. The Salisbury Police Department will use its share of the funds to purchase body camera systems for Patrol and their Police Interdiction Teams (PIT); a portable alarm system for burglary investigations; an undercover surveillance recording camera for the Narcotics Division, to be used while making narcotic buys; binoculars for the Vice Narcotic Unit; replacement bullet proof vest panels for the Special Response Team (SRT); surveillance recording cameras for use while investigating crimes of Graffiti and Vandalisms; digital high definition cameras for the PIT; and promotional materials to assist the department with police officer recruitment and to aid in building upon existing community relations. The Rowan County Sheriff's Office will their share of the funds to purchase rifles and blackhawk swift slings; radar units; and Tasers with accessories. NCA/NCF
