The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) will award sub-grants that support local governments in Florida by allowing them to develop projects for JAG funding in all seven purpose areas. The types of programs under each purpose area will vary based on the sub-grant applications received but may include: 1) law enforcement programs to provide overtime and equipment; apprehend violent fugitives; disrupt illicit commerce; and to eradicate marijuana, dismantle clandestine laboratories, and enforce drug laws; 2) prosecution and court programs to include career criminal prosecution programs to improve the investigation and prosecution of all types of crimes; 3) prevention and education programs to provide community and neighborhood programs to assist citizens in preventing and controlling crime; 4) corrections and community corrections programs to support programs designed to provide additional public correctional resources and improve the correctional system; 5) drug treatment programs to identify and provide treatment for adults and juvenile offenders with substance abuse dependencies; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs to provide criminal justice information systems to assist law enforcement, prosecution, courts, and corrections organizations; and 7) crime victim and witness programs to develop and implement programs to provide assistance to jurors, witnesses, and victims of crimes (other than compensation).
