The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The City of Stockton and San Joaquin County Divisions of the Sheriff's Office, District Attorney's Office, and Probation Department propose to use the FY 2015 JAG Award to continue to fund the Firearms Reduction Consortium. The City of Stockton will use its portion to fund an internationally recognized Firearms Examiner and overtime staffing costs for the Stockton Police Department to fund at least four proactive firearm missions with the participating agencies. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office will fund overtime to participate in the proactive missions focusing on specific, targeted areas known for high rates of gun related crimes. The District Attorney's Office will continue to partially fund a Deputy District Attorney position who will be assigned to the Armed Prohibited Persons Program. The Probation Department will provide support by assigning Probation Officers on an overtime basis, to assist the San Joaquin County Sheriff, City of Stockton Police, and other law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of guns in the possession of criminals.
