Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2015, $2,446,888)

The purpose of the Firearms Locks Distribution Program is to select a provider to distribute firearms locks and to educate current or potential firearms owners about the dangers of unlocked firearms and the value of locking firearms. The program campaign will include distribution of free firearm locking devices and safe storage educational materials on the use of these devices. Additionally, the effort will include an advertising campaign to raise awareness of the program and the safety issues associated with unlocked firearms. The program is intended to give special emphasis on reaching out to non-traditional gun owners living in urban and suburban areas, new gun owners and those who may not have had access to traditional firearms safety classes.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) will provide a professionally executed firearm safety education and secure storage program to deter unauthorized access to firearms and help communities build a sustained culture of safety. The goals of the campaign are to make safe firearm storage synonymous with responsible gun ownership. CA/NCF
