Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $1,000,000)

The National Crime Gun Intelligence Center Initiative, administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) in partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), will support multi-disciplinary teams to identify perpetrators, connect criminal activity, sources of crime guns for immediate disruption, investigation, and prosecution. The focus of this effort is to create and sustain Crime Gun Intelligence Centers (CGIC) in two jurisdictions that will produce timely and actionable information focusing the efforts of its partners –including police, prosecutors, and forensic experts on identifying criminal activity and perpetrators. The goal is to implement a comprehensive and holistic model to address precipitous increases in crime through the reduction of gun crime and illegal firearm possession.

The City of Los Angeles, serving as the fiscal agent for the Los Angeles Police Department, will use the grant funds to establish a Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC). The Los Angeles CGIC will produce timely and objective intelligence data, crime gun evidence and focus their forensic and prosecutorial resources on the most violent gun related offenses in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The goals of the project are to build the capacity to identify perpetrators, repeat offenders, connect crimes, as well increase convictions and reduce the overall rate of gun related crimes. CA/NCF
